HISTORY ASPECTS:
The North American P-51B Mustang "Ding Hao!" was famously flown by Major James Howard, the commander of the 356th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. Major Howard became one of the most celebrated pilots of the war due to his extraordinary bravery and skill in aerial combat. The P-51 Mustang, introduced as a long-range escort fighter, revolutionized air combat with its combination of speed, maneuverability, and extended range, providing critical support to Allied bombing missions deep into enemy territory.
On January 11, 1944, while flying "Ding Hao!" over Germany, Major Howard performed a feat of heroism that earned him the Medal of Honor. During an escort mission to protect a formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses, the bomber group came under heavy attack from a large number of Luftwaffe fighters. In a remarkable display of courage, Howard single-handedly engaged more than 30 German fighters for over 30 minutes, relentlessly defending the bombers despite the overwhelming odds and running low on fuel and ammunition. His aggressive tactics and expert piloting resulted in multiple enemy kills and successfully deterred further attacks, allowing the bombers to complete their mission.
The action over Germany was just one of many instances in which "Ding Hao!" played a pivotal role in the air war over Europe. The 354th Fighter Group, known as the "Pioneers," was the first to operate the Mustang in combat and was instrumental in establishing air superiority over Europe. Howard’s leadership and bravery became legendary, and his actions with "Ding Hao!" served as an inspiration to his squadron and fellow aviators throughout the war. The success of the Mustang, exemplified by Howard’s exploits, contributed significantly to the Allied victory in the air, providing essential cover for bombers and challenging the Luftwaffe’s dominance.
With its authentic detailing and historical markings, this 1:72 scale model is an excellent addition to any collection, honoring the bravery of Medal of Honor recipient Maj. James Howard and the crucial role of the P-51B Mustang in the quest for air superiority over Europe.
